Indonesia 2015 : Papua Explorers Dive Resort

Welcome to the 2015 bi-annual dive expedition from The African and Oriental Travel Company. In early march we plan to visit Papua Explorers in Raja Ampat.

The diving in Raja Ampat is mind blowing. It is hard to explain this. The diving is reef diving, not so deep unless you want to go, with sharks, wobbegongs, various leaf fish, and macro creatures. If the plankton blooms, we get lost of mantas. There are usually hundreds of barracuda and jacks.. I cannot remember a dive without sharks. The biodiversity is quite something. However the visibility goes in and out, from 50 metres to 5 metres in some of the passages. And there are some currents, and good buoyancy and knowing how to use an SMB is a must.

In spite of that this has to be one of the world’s most incredible dive destinations.

Our hosts…

We have a personal connection with this resort as Tunc and Selen Yavuzdogan, the owner/creators of the lodge made the journey out to Pemba all those years ago with a group of Turkish Divers. Tunc and Selen are first class divers and hugely dynamic individuals. Before moving to Asia and building a stilted dive resort from scratch, Tunc taught half of Istanbul to dive.

Tunc is extremely well regarded in Indonesia as well as throughout the global dive community. He is an international dive professional. We would also consider him to be a good friend.

Dive days…

Diving at Papex goes something like this: meet up at 0815hrs for a briefing and boats leave at 0830hrs. This allows guests to do two morning dives and return to the Resort for lunch at around 1300hrs.

An afternoon dive is available, and on some days the boat goes out for a triple tank dive- but this all at the discretion of the dive manager- they decide on adaily basis based upon guest wishes and local conditions. (seen here is Ross telling it like it is).

The “PapEx” Resort

The resort is extremely comfortable. All rooms are on stilts over the sea and made from wood and local materials. They are fan cooled for your comfort. Power from sockets is supplied by a generator. They are well appointed. The Resort is on a small island, so be aware of this. You can walk to the local village at low tide only. There is wifi in the restaurant area which is at best intermittent.
The restaurant is excellent and has first class food. There is not much more to say about this. It’s good European and Asian food. There is a full service bar with spirits and Beers.
